In a world dominated by cutting edge technology, art that is hand-made and crafted-by-humans is becoming more and more rare. Yet drawings have always been and will continue to be timeless pieces. Few things are as personal and sentimental as a custom portrait. I look forward to sharing your journey of crafting wonderful memories for years to come.
Choosing references
Do you have a specific moment or memory you would like to preserve as a portrait? What sort of photos make the best references? Sometimes our options are limited when it comes to the photos we have of a pet or loved one. But the better quality the photo, the better the end result of the portrait will be.
My favorite part of drawing is capturing a subject's likeness and personality. To properly do this though, a photograph with good lighting and clear details is essential. Photos taken far away tend to be less suitable. If possible, multiple references can be helpful.
Here are some examples of good references:
Reference Examples
Reference 1: Natural lighting is often the best choice.
Reference 2: Lots of contrast between lights and darks make great drawings.
Reference 3: Although the lighting in this photo is not ideal, the subject's head and shoulders are in clear view and have enough detail that is clear to see.
I use heavyweight acid-free paper in white or black to ensure the artwork lasts.
